Harsh words that were voiced only a second ago echoed deep inside a certain brown doe eyed boys head. The white crisp snow fell down harder as if their sting against his skin was the physical form of those uncaring words. Sungmin could only stare at the spot where his now ex-boyfriend had been standing only moments before. Why did this always happen to him? He thought that Kibum had been the one for him, that he was the missing piece to the puzzle he called life but he was wrong. The cold bit into Sungmins skin as if the etch this memory and scene into him forever. Sungmin held the deteriorating heart in his arms close as he took off running not wanting to live that moment any longer.
"I don't love you, and i never have"
the apartment Sungmin lived in was small and plain. It may provide him shelter from the snow that wanted to freeze his body but it was impossible for it to shelter and protect his heart and his feeling which had been crushed countless times before. Who would want him? He curled up into a little ball on his pathetic excuse for a bed. The worn out springs groaned under his weight and for the fourth time that day the headboard threatened to give way. Sungmins heart was left discarded on the bed its seams threatening to come undone.
It took Sungmin three weeks to recover from that break-up. Sitting on his bed he raised the pointed tip of a sewing needle towards his heart as he started to stitch up the countless opening that appeared. With each hole being sown up he couldn't help but think of the people he had loved before who had all left him. Leeteuk was his first, his first and most precious love. That boy was an angel walking on the earth, God must have thought so too because he took him away. They had just finished watching a movie and were on their way to go eat. They had reached a crossing when Leeteuk had stopped to tie-up his shoes, something that Sungmin didn't notice due to his excitement. It had all happened so fast. There was the sound of a car engine speeding, the next thing Sungmin knew he was being pushed forward away from the oncoming car by Leeteuk who knew Sungmin was in trouble. Leeteuk never survived from the crash. It was an instant death which Sungmin was later grateful for because at least Leeteuk didn't suffer.
Sungmin ran his fingers over the biggest scar on his heart. Yes Leeteuk was his first and most painful experience. Sungmin moved his finger to a slightly smaller scar. This scar was for Shindong. Sungmin first met Shindong at a local dance contest. He was charismatic, funny, and was completely adorable. In that small space of a minute Shindong had won over all the audience but most of all he won over Sungmins heart which had been frozen like the flecks of snow that were floating down from the sky. Shindong re-introduced Sungmin to the light side of life. Where every day he would wake up from his slumber and think life couldn't get better. All that was brought crashing down when Sungmin saw Shindong kissing a beautiful Korean woman one night. Sungmin felt betrayed and it felt like his heart had been shattered. It took a year to get over that relationship.
Who was next? Oh yes the next scar was for a beautiful Chinese male named Hangeng who he accidently stumbled across one night when he was drunk. Sungmin found Hangengs accent so adorable, That Chinese accent and lips forming the Korean words made Sungmins knees go weak. That relationship he was sure was going to last. They went out with each other for a year and a half; Sungmin was so sure of their love. One night Hangeng invited Sungmin out, there he said that he was moving to china and did not wish to have a long distance relationship. The next day Hangeng disappeared to China and Sungmin disappeared under a blurry veil created by three bottles of soju.
Heechul came not long after Hangeng but they didn't last that long either. Heechul used Sungmin as a means of escape but from what even til this day Sungmin isn't sure. Heechul was absolutely beautiful at first Sungmin honestly thought he was a she. Heechul had a sea of dark hair that flowed to his waist a milky white skin that was so perfectly flawless. He had a temper to rival his looks though. The beautiful Heechul left for another country in search for the person he call 'Hannie', who was supposedly his soul mate.
The last and final scar was one that was created only three weeks ago. Sungmin thought he had really connected with Kibum. Kibum would answer questions that Sungmin would think but never ask. Surely a connection like that meant they would last. Sungmin sighed as he looked at the worn out heart in his hands. Who would want someone like him? His heart looked like it had been trampled on too many times, which it had. Tears of sadness and maybe even humiliation feel from Sungmins eyes. There were so many people out there in the world with hearts more beautiful than his; he’s never going to have someone to call his own.
Holding his heart tightly he fell asleep on the pathetic structure he called a bed. Dried tears stained his flushed red cheeks. How Sungmin wished it was different. How he wished instead of being lulled by his tears, someone would hold him in their arms and caress him to sleep.
The next morning Sungmin decided he had spent long enough mopping about his sad excuse for a love life. He got dressed in his favourite pink jacket and dark blue jeans and headed out into the snowy cold streets of Korea. Sungmin skipped his way to the supermarket. Partially because his jacket no longer kept him as warm as it should have, and partially because it was easier to be happy when he did. His heart was held securely close to him at all times.
Sungmin was in one of the food isles looking for something to make for dinner. He could hear quite a commotion but didn’t look to see what was going on. He didn’t like to stick his nose in other people’s business and he appreciated it very much when others did the same.
“Watch out!”
Hands grabbed Sungmin and pushed him. For a second Sungmins heart stopped. Was he reliving the day that Leeteuk died? The pain that shot through his arm proved otherwise. He looked down to find that a glass jar had broken open; pieces of it were imbedded in his skin. There was a crash and he looked up to see a runaway trolley, the cause of the commotion, crash into a stack of cans sending them crashing into the floor.
“Are you okay”
A hand floated in front of Sungmins eyes. Bright light surrounded his vision when he looked up. Leeteuk? The person moved closer examining Sungmins wound. No it wasn’t Leeteuk. The guys hair was a dark brown that curled around his neck and stopped just above his chocolate brown eyes. He waved his hand out to Sungmin again, and this time Sungmin took it. A beautiful woman came out of nowhere making the now sensitive Sungmin jump.
“Oh my gosh are you okay? The trolley…”
There was the sound of more cans falling to the floor. The woman quickly ran over asking others if they were okay and apologizing for the trolley running away from her. Sungmins mind was spinning. The events it just reminded him so much of that day.
“Helloo is anyone in there?”
The guy that helped Sungmin up was waving his hand in front of Sungmins face. Sungmin snapped out of his nightmare.
“Uh…Oh thank you”
Sungmin realised that that he was missing his heart. He turned around and looked where he was standing before but it wasn’t any where to be seen. His eyes widened and he started to panic. Where was it? There was the sound of a dog barking and screams out countless people that were shopping in the center.
“Stop that dog!”
The dog sprinted past Sungmin carry so disease looking thing in its jaws. The boy that had helped Sungmin blinked a few times to make sure he was seeing right. First a shopping trolley stampeded its way through an isle almost knocking the beautiful boy, who he pushed out of its path, down and now there was a dog running in the store. Well he was never coming here again he concluded. Sungmin took off running suddenly leaving a trail of blood from his cut hand on the shopping ground. Kyuhyun had a choice he could follow the boy and make sure he’s alright or he could mind his own business and head home.
Option two Kyuhyun said to himself as he walked away. A few steps later he rolled his eyes and sighed. Whoever said he had no heart was a complete liar. He took off running hoping to catch up to the injured boy to make sure he was alright.
Sungmin had realised that the disgusting thing that was the dog’s jaws was actually his heart. Even if it was run down and stitched all over the place he couldn’t lose it. Even though it was covered in scars it held all the beautiful memories he had. The dog finally stopped running and sat down biting into Sungmins heart. When Sungmin tried to take it off the dog it just barked like crazy scaring the hell out of him. Sungmin didn’t know what to do. He wanted his heart back but couldn’t get it, tears started to run down his face.
Kyuhyun sighed in relief when spotted the boy standing in a park. With a jacket that was right pink it was very hard to not find him. As Kyuhyun got closer he heard the boy sobbing. Why is he crying? Since when did Kyuhyun care about people he just met?
“Are you okay?”
Sungmin turned to the man who had helped his earlier with tear coated eyes. No matter what he tried the dog wouldn’t let go of his heart. It wouldn’t even taste nice it was just a stuffed red heart. No it was Sungmins stuffed heart that had been with him since the beginning. With a shaky hand he pointed towards the dog who for some reason seemed not bothered by the white fluff that was now sticking out through the holes of Sungmins heart.
Kyuhyun followed the boys pointed finger to the dog that was chewing on a worn out stuffed heart. Did the heart belong to this boy? It must have been very special if he was crying about it. Kyuhyun put a hand that was supposed to be comforting on the Sungmins shoulder before walking towards the dog.
Sungmin could only watch in fear as the stranger walked towards the dog. Sungmin wanted to tell him to forget about it. Just for the sake of his memories he was willing to let a stranger confront a dog that was for some reason happily chewing on his heart. He watched as they pulled something from their pocket and waved it in front of the dog. The dog immediately lost interest in Sungmins heart. When they chucked whatever it was to the side the dog immediately ran for it.
Kyuhyun was happy that the dog took the bait and quickly picked up the stuffed heart that was now covered with dog bites all over. Sungmin watched in surprise as they didn’t even flinch when they picked up his heart and started walking towards him. Kyuhyun stopped right in front of Sungmin a smile on his face. He found it weird that his heart fluttered when he noticed Sungmins lack of tears and a smile.
“Here”
Kyuhyun held out the heart to Sungmin. He freaked out when Sungmin started to cry again. No please don’t cry he begged in his head. Kyuhyun frowned at himself when he found himself wanting the wipe the others tears away. Sungmin saw the frown and thought that Kyuhyun was disgusted at him.
“Thank you”
Sungmin went to grab his heart out of Kyuhyuns hands but instead swayed and almost lost consciousness as he fell forward. Kyuhyun saw Sungmins body sway forwards and moved closer to catch him. For what felt like the hundredth time that day Kyuhyun asked if he was okay. Sungmin felt so dizzy and woozy and didn’t know why. He cursed he eyes as they drooped of their own accord tossing him into the black veil that was his consciousness.
Kyuhyun felt the boy get heavier in his hands. Oh great just what I need he thought. Well I could just leave him here. Kyuhyun dismissed that thought as soon as it popped into his head. There was just something about this boy that made him not want to let him go. Holding the boy in one hand he fished his phone out of his pocket and dialled a number.
“Yah Kyuhyun how many times have I told you…”
“Hyung I need help”
Sungmin woke to find himself in a strange room. He sat up straight with caused pain to shoot up his right arm. He looked down at his arm to find pink bandages wrapped around it. He looked up from his arm glancing around the room. Was he in heaven? Most of the objects were blue in colour, there were all different shades so it didn’t assault ones eyes. Whoever was the decorator he wanted them maybe they could do something in pink. Sungmin leisurely ran a hand through his hair. My heart! Sungmin slapped his forehead. You’re more worried about that heart then where you are he scolded himself. The door opened and he jumped back. A tall and handsome looking man entered, his eyes widened in surprise when he saw Sungmin was awake. The man clapped his hands together.
“Ah you’re awake. Are you feeling alright? You had Kyuhyun…”
He pointed to the door behind him.
“…Quite worried you know.”
His eyebrows furrowed together for a second before moving back to their original place. He clapped his hands together once again before speaking. (I bet most of you have figured out who this is already.
“Ah how rude of me. My name is…”
Sungmin didn’t catch the name of the person; he was too busy trying to figure out where he was. Who was Kyuhyun?
“…You gave us quite a scare you know”
They waved their finger from side to side as if scolding a child. The door behind them opened and in walked in Kyuhyun. Sungmins eyes widened that was the boy who had helped him yesterday with the runaway shopping trolley and the dog who stole literally his heart.
From that day on Sungmin and Kyuhyun had found themselves drawn to each other. At first it wasn’t in any kind of romantic way. It was more like they were puppets and they person controlling them made it so they always met. Or that they were like magnets that always seem to draw together no matter how much you pulled them apart as soon as you let go they re-attach together. They grew accustom to it and soon became best friends.
One day they were sitting down on a couch in Kyuhyuns house when Sungmin handed Kyuhyun his heart. Sungmin felt so embarrassed handing his wore out heart that was stitched a hundred times over but Kyuhyun didn’t seem to mind. Kyuhyun was actually happy that Sungmin had trusted him with his most prized possession. Sungmin lived in fear ever since that day while Kyuhyun lived in pure bliss. Every time Sungmin opened his eyes he was scared that Kyuhyun was going to tell him that he wasn’t worth his time.
“Sungmin come with me”
Sungmins heart dropped into the pit of his stomach. Was today the day. Sungmin felt sick. His heart thumped hard in his chest and his head started to spin. Regardless he followed Kyuhyun into his room. His hands started to shake as the door closed behind him. He had heard those words too many times before.
“Sungmin”
Sungmin filched at his name coming out of Kyuhyuns mouth. Kyuhyun stood with his arms crossed over his chest looking down at Sungmin. Sungmin knew that look, just when he thought he finally found the one he was meant to be with…Tears started to fall down his eyes. Why …why couldn’t it be different this time around?
“Sungmin close your eyes”
Sungmin closed his eyes straight away. The sooner this happened the quicker he could leave and attempt to piece back his life together. He had been with a lot of people but for some reason Kyuhyun was special. If Kyuhyun…IF he ever lost Kyuhyun…His life would never be the same. He needed Kyuhyun like he needed air and water. Something was placed in Sungmins hands. Was it a new thing to give a goodbye present before kicking that person out of your life?
“Open your eyes”
Sungmin hesitated before complying. He looked down he only saw the red and he knew what it was. Like everyone else Kyuhyun had given his heart back. Sungmin broke down and cried crumpling to the floor. He really wanted this time to be different.
“Sungmin why are you crying”
Great so Kyuhyun wanted to rub it in even more. Sungmin just cried harder. He couldn’t take it. Kyuhyun frowned this wasn’t the reaction he was after. He bent down trying to catch Sungmins eye, but the other kept avoiding him.
“Sungmin darn it look at me”
Sungmin still just continued to cry. Kyuhyun sighed. He placed two gentle fingers on either side of Sungmins chin, lifted it up and kissed him on the mouth. At the feel of two soft lips pressing against his Sungmin stopped crying. Why was Kyuhyun doing this? Was this a goodbye kiss? Kyuhyun pulled away and Sungmin straight away looked down. Kyuhyun frowned was Sungmin rejecting his feelings? IT was then that Sungmin noticed something vital. It wasn’t his heart that he was holding. The heart in his hands was still a perfect shade of red that was untouched by rips or string.
“Kyuhyun this isn’t my heart”
Kyuhyun rolled his eyes and flicked Sungmins nose. Sungmin pouted still confused as to what was going on.
“Of course it’s not bapo it’s mine.
Sungmin blinked a few times.
“Yours?”
“Yes Sungmin its mine and you better take good care of it”
Kyuhyun stood up riffling his own hair. Sungmin really knew how to frustrate him. First crying for no reason and now he was acting as if Kyuhyun was an alien. Kyuhyun wasn’t on his feet long because Sungmin tackled him to the ground, crying while he was kissing Kyuhyun and in between he kept saying ‘thank you’. Kyuhyun pulled Sungmin and deepened all those kisses a smile playing on his lips. This time was different. Kyuhyun was going to stay by Sungmins side forever.
Up above in the high heaves a beautiful angel stood watch Sungmin finally find his soul mate.
“Took him long enough”
The angel turned around to his companion a dimple appeared when he smiled.
“He would have found him eventually”
“Yes but the whole shopping trolley and dog stealing his heart made it all go faster”
The dimple smiling angel shook his head at his companion before looking back down at Sungmin and Kyuhyun.
“You shouldn’t have interfered Kangin but that doesn’t matter right now. All that matters is that he’s happy”
The angels smiled again down at Sungmin. He had come a long way and now he had finally found the one he was destined to be with. Kangin watched his companion smile as he looked down and smiled as well. No matter what happened they would protect the strong love that Kyuhyun and Sungmin shared. Love after all is something worth fighting for.
