Yard Food Day 2009

This is the traditional journal entry to record the first day of the year I've eaten something that was growing in the backyard.

crowns? like, the yellow blossom part?

The crown is the white part that connects the root to the leaves. I'll post a photo next time I make them.

yum. childhood experience attests that those things are bitter when they're raw-- but I bet they're great after you cook 'em.

Oh, yea ~ sauteed in olive oil and garlic & sprinkled with some sea salt; it's a fine vegetable dish. Next time I'm going to skip the blanching step which is to cut the bitterness. Yesterday there was no trace of bitterness. I'm okay with my food having a little bit of kick to it.
