I agree with you about the Nazi references, Godwin's law is good practical advice, there's nothing to be gained by the comparison even when it's partially apt. Ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe or Rwanda, there was an argument there, but not the Tea Party.

That said, I really am disturbed by the thuggery displayed and weakly condemned by Joe Miller (employed active-duty military to handcuff an adversarial journalist illegally), and now a Rand Paul staffer assaulting (but you're right, certainly not curb-stomping as some have said) a Move On protestor.

It's not that great harm was done to these people, it's that the political operations behind these candidates thought that this was the right approach to dissent. These weren't random supporters who had too much to drink and got out of control, these were official representatives of the campaigns in both cases.

God help us if it's not a big deal if it doesn't rise to the level of the Nazis.

Rob Reiner is a complete douche in the same way that Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck are douches. Listening to his rhetoric is a waste of your time and a disservice to serious people on the left. And Obama appearing on Stewart's show isn't an indignity. It's making an effort to reach the people. The bigger issue is that the news media has become so fractured and untrustworthy that so many people actually get their news from a comedy show.
