In many layouts, there's a left or right side margin navigation column with headings. One of them is "Profile", and there's an icon below that's a link to all the userpics. Then there's the user name and the user subtitle.

Only the tiny image before the user name is an actual link to the profile. I think this is frustrating, especially as I was on LJ two years before I realized that the tiny image was a profile link.

As duskwuff points out, the little image is always a profile link. Most of these same layouts that you're referring to also have a profile link in the top bar. For a minuscule change like this that seemingly benefits you only, just make the change through a theme layer.

well gosh, maybe the name should be "Icon", because that's closer to what it really is. Usually good to make the text actually describe the content -- basic user interface guideline.

The little image is completely opaque to anyone who doesn't know it's a separate link.

FYI, I found this suggestion confusing, and it wasn't until I read the comments that I realized you're referring to something that's part of a particular theme I've never seen. (I don't know what a "friends place" is either)
