Read my mind...made a similar comment about that in lj_releases.

This could be a similar behavior as polls...if you maintain a Paid or Permanent community, you can post polls in that community. If a community has a paid account, then all maintainers (even basic) could benefit from notes and see information regarding banned users.

I like the idea, I'm just unclear on implementation and ui.

There's already the work as community drop-down and ?authas=comm in the ban page; the same could be added for the notes page.

The notes field could also be added to the community members list.

As the notes file itself cannot be larger than 64k, the notes page is unlikely to get out of hand the way the community members list can, and the notes page does not appear to be crazybad the way the manage filters page is, so a console command for notes is not likely to be needed.

I love how you jump right to assuming I'm all console! <3 <3 <3 I do care about accessibilty, but that's not the part that's stymieing me today. (I think I did already comment in lj_releases about my accessibility investigation with notes, although I haven't used them to remember my results.)

My confusion is actually with figuring out what gets displayed on all the pages except the ban page (or even the notes page). That is, one of the advantages of the notes is how it is shown any time you have an lj-user link. Would it instead display the community note when you're on that community's journal? If not, how would it indicate a note for those users, and how would it differentiate between yours and a community? What about for those users who you have a note for in another community you maintain, but not for the one you're looking at? Etc, etc :)

To keep it simple, I would say to have it be your own notes unless you are ?authas=whatever, working as the community. Therefore when you are viewing the comm ban page, comm notes page, you see the comm notes. When you are viewing the comm members page, comm notes. If you're not ?authas, then show your own notes.

To reduce confusion, perhaps use a different symbol for comm notes, such as a dagger. Therefore if you're seeing asterisks, you're looking at your own notes; if you see a dagger, look for an assassin the community you're working as.

To keep things simple, I would say that even if there's another note that you can view for someone, don't even check for it unless you're on an appropriate management page and authorized.

Unless it's maybe on their profile? Since that would be a place that I would think of to go that's all about that user. It would be nice to be able to see all available notes for someone somewhere.
