If it's optional, sure, why not? But it should probably come with a warning because you just know that some people will randomly turn it off and then complain because they lost their entry.

This.

But you know... I can see a possible merit in the ability to toggle auto-save: the potential to keep auto-saved drafts stored while you post an interim one, not unlike what happens when you toggle JavaScript.

For instance, say I started posting an entry via my computer, whose browser has JS enabled, but I decide to stop before posting. Because JS was enabled, the draft is stored. Then I want to post another entry on my mobile device, which doesn't have JS enabled. It never tries to pull the draft forward when I post the entry from mobile. When I later start posting another entry from my computer with the JS-enabled browser, it will prompt me to restore the draft, as though I hadn't posted any entries in the meantime. Perhaps the ability to disable auto-save could result in this possible application.

Uh, sorry if that doesn't make any sense. =/ I haven't had much sleep. ^^;;

While an individual post is small compared to the entire page, if the client and server are chattering at each other every thirty seconds or however often autosave kicks in, I'm not sure "infinitessimal" is an accurate description. There's a lot more to AJAX communication than just the plaintext, as a rule.
