The existing search box does have an option to search for usernames, but there is no such box on the logged-out homepage.

For clarification: the option is "Site & User", and it's third in the dropdown menu on the search box. It used to be the default, and I think it should be returned to being default.

Why not just tell them to write Moe1409Szyslak.livejournal.com? If they can remember your username and the fact that the site is LJ.com, they can put the two together easily, right?

Why should they have to? If you have an account somewhere, it sort of behooves you to remember, but there are so many social networking/social media sites that don't give custom subdomains that I have a hard time remembering which does which. It's particularly hard for LJ-clones because clones that are operating off old code may still have subdomains as a paid-only feature.

Ah, I see. Well, it would be pretty easy to code this feature, so no harm in changing it.

except it would make the journal easier to find by people you didn't want to find it.

admitedly not that much harder, because if they were that desperate to find if you had a journal or not they would make a sock-puppet account and search for you there, but even so.

I personally am not hugely against the idea, I can just see this as being an obvious downfall for some.

I tried logging out and I don't see any place you can get to the search window without being logged in. I even went through the Site map at the bottom of the page.

Actually, from the privacy perspective, I kinda like the fact that it isn't so easy to find a journal. If I choose to invite someone to my LJ account, I'd surely give them the direct URL.

I'd vote to keep things the way they are.

It's possible (Explore LJ), but you can only search by interests, I believe. Anything else requires you to be logged in.

I'm very strongly with the OP on this one.

I hardly have a difficult user name to remember, and so when I just tell people to "go find 7rin on LJ", there should be some way for them to be able to look for me, and they shouldn't be expected to have to remember the damn URL (even though I know that for regular LJ users it's not difficult to remember, just telling someone at a party means they may not know how LJ structures its URLs)!
