I like this idea, though I've no clue how hard it would be to implement (???).

Maybe it would be nice just to have something that displays on the Profile page that indicates you're open to being friended by others...

The database idea sound good -- but it also sounds like a lot of work. And it also sounds like it might use up a lot of resources.

I guess I have a reserved thumbs up for this.

I hadn't considered age and a personality quiz... that's the bit that would require users' consent, yes? Interesting. Well, I'm all for improving the current discovery tools.

I've always wanted to be able to find people via multiple interests. For example: mac + merlin, and I would be on a friending spree. Right now though, I put interest=merlin and watching=appleworld. Unfortunately, I don't get many results this way. So, yeah, I wish the directory would allow me to search via multiple values per field.

I'm not adverse to the idea, it seems like fun.

It wouldn't be a high priority for me over a lot of other suggestions in here but it definitely does sound like fun. I think it would be popular among the younger teen users the most.

I can't believe noone has linked this yet:

http://www.livejournal.com/singles/

(Granted, it's not really for friends.)

Generally, the "matching users" thing makes me wonder. Lots of my friends have quite different interests from mine, are different kinds of people and located all over the world. That's most of the fun of it. I don't think users should be matched on having entered similar information. As mentioned above, this might be quite difficult to implement, what with the personality quiz and all. Better search features would be nice, though.

I quite like the singles thing and my idea is not dissimiliar. But the singles thing has a much narrower focus and is probably quite scary for women! But you could probably use the same datebase and have a "looking for friends" option as well as "single".

*grins* The singles page is an (ancient) parody, though, so the scariness is not unintended.

Oh, but that's so restrictive! Why do I have to specify that I'm only looking for EITHER boys OR girls? And what about our transgendered friends? And, really, there's a mighty big difference between "available" & "looking"!
