Title
Comment deletion outside of your own journal

Short, concise description of the idea
I'd like to see it changed so that users can NOT delete comments they make outside of their own journals or communities.

Full description of the ideaThe problem is that since users are able to delete ANY comment they make, in or out of their own journal, it ( Read more... )

I disagree with this suggestion, in a large part because it goes against LiveJournal's policy on comments, which is that they are the property of the person who made them, and the person who made them is free to delete them (and there are cases where LiveJournal must assist in helping a user delete a comment they have lost access to).

No.
Is there something preventing you from using the emailed copies to report your troll?

The things I write are mine, regardless of whether I chose to write them in my journal or you have chosen to allow me to post them in your journal. That choice is yours; you don't have to allow anyone to comment on your journal.

I have to say that I have had zero problems with trolls since I set my journal to screen all non-friend comments.

Last I heard, email notifications were not acceptable evidence in an Abuse report. While I'm not in possession of definitive knowledge about why, I can guess that the reasons are likely to include the fact that basically you can forward an email and edit it to say anything.

Hm. Ok, I can see that. I admit I've never actually tried to report a troll using emails; my trolls (when I had them) were too proud of their "wit" to delete their comments.

That's pretty much the reason, yep. Can't accept any form of a 'copy' - ie emails, screenshots, cut and paste etc. As they're too easily manipulated.

What azurelunatic said. While I realise that trolls can be annoying, there are (as mentioned in the original suggestion) efficient ways of preventing them. Therefore, I don't think that the concept of giving users control over their own content should be given up.

regarding this: As for the other, the answer to that is that if you are going to be inclined to delete a comment after the fact if you don't like the response it's getting...you probably shouldn't be posting it at all. You shouldn't have the right to weasel out of an uncomfortable discussion by deleting a comment and trying to pretend you never posted it.Well, this argument doesn't really hold water. There are a variety of reasons why people might want to delete their own comments, and many of them don't have anything to do with "weaseling out" of anything, as you so nicely generalise it. People might inadvertently post a comment in a wrong thread, creating confusion, they might mistakenly copy and paste the wrong thing somewhere, they might publish private information which they later ( ... )

Would it be possible for deleted comments to not actually be deleted, but hidden? Then they could still be seen by the maintainers / abuse team if there was an allegation of inappropriate behaviour, but not shown to people otherwise. (The difference with screened comments being that screened comments are always shown to maintainers, whereas deleted comments would only be shown when explicitly asked for.)

I made a suggestion with an alternate solution to the same underlying need: http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/936202.html

If I thought that the original suggestion had any merit whatever, I would fully endorse this suggested solution.
