Yeah, I think we can safely assume that foxfirefey wasn't serious. ;-)

Oh yes! And the greatest thing would be that LJ could gradually increase the size of the ads if more money was needed. At what ad size would people stop using sponsored icons? 60x60? 75x75?

This would also provide a creativity boost for the icon-making community - now, the challenge for icon-makers would be to create icons that work around the ad space (leaving one corner of the icon blank in order to host the ad). Of course, LJ could thwart these efforts by randomly selecting in which corner the ad is displayed... or by actually rotating the ad over the icon's surface. This might be nice, actually, as it would allow people to view the whole icon if they only waited for the ad to rotate round it once.

Moving ads are funny.

Why userpics and not moodthemes? I would definitely use a moodtheme if I knew that it let me both support LJ's bottom line and annoy my friends the people who read my journal.

Well, mostly because I think suggestions is for suggesting things that LJ hasn't implemented yet. So, sponsored mood themes, sponsored layouts, sponsored accounts, sponsored Writer's Block suggestions, sponsored links in the Explore area, and sponsored sponsored v-gifts aren't part of this suggestion, because they've all been done before.

Additionally, this is much BETTER than sponsored mood themes, because users have the ability to view their own mood themes on their friends pages instead of those of their friends, reducing the impressions. It's also much, much easier to ad block sponsored mood themes without detrimental effects on the quality of service.

OTOH, think of the possibility for targeted ads! Wouldn't you love, when you make a post and say you're angry, to get an ad for a sporting good store where you could buy a baseball bat? Or, if you feel depressed, to be pointed to a no-waiting-period gun store in your neighborhood?

You know, date aside, I actually kind of like this suggestion. Anything that cuts down on the whining of unpaid users is a plus in my book.

Only if I, as a permanent account owner, can NOT SEE them. I don't care what the unpaid whiners think! They can pony up for their accounts dagnabbit.

I take paid users not seeing ads as a given. I'm still all crotchety about having to see ads on the front page when I'm logging in.

Periodically I still see them when logged in. It makes me an excessively cranky cat.
