tagboard is an easier way of communicating.
especially if a reader of your livejournal doesn't have a livejournal.
it's true that the person can comment on the post.
however, it's kinda a hassle and also, it's difficult for that person
to track back to the comment he/she has posted after we post a new entry
and to check if we have replied.
thus, a tagboard saves the trouble and is more convenient.
however, there is a bad side to tagboard.
people can spam it.
but no worries, cause now we are able to track their IP address.
so.. yeah ;D

Anyway... Yeah, tagboards help especially when a friend post a comment but can't remember which entry he/she posted that comment in but wish to see if there is a reply... Plus some user post regularly, making comments hard to track, for both the user and the commenter.
On top of that, if someone wants to post a general message to the user, for example, requesting to be linked to the user's blog, just dropping a 'hi' or as some people call it, 'leaving behind a footprint' etc., leaving a comment in a specific entry seems weird...
So by having a tagboard option, be it a LJ original design or outsourced tagboards, we can further customize our blogs by having a general chatting/message-leaving area on the tagboard while leaving entry-specific comments attached to the actual entry, letting readers decide if they wish to view the comments by clicking on the link...

If it cannot work alone, why not integrate it with lj-talk? Doesn't that use sort of a script that looks java-based?
