I was wondering if LiveJournal would consider increasing the userpic limit for those of us who have free LJ accounts?

Sorry; this is one of the main reasons people upgrade to Paid and the site has to get revenue somehow. It was definitely one of the factors in my own decision to buy paid time.

If you want more userpics, get a paid account. They're pretty cheap.

Heck, I'm sorry to say it, but userpics is one of two reasons I upgraded to a Permanent Account when they became available this past round.

Besides, think of the amount of server space required, even at LJ's ridiculously low limit of 40k per pic.

I've been given to understand that the expensive factor is less storage space, and more bandwidth.

In either case - it seems that the users want extra stuff that actually DOES cost LJ money, for free.

That's not how the world works: If you want something that costs money to produce or maintain, you PAY for it, either through ads (like Plust LJ accounts, broadcast radio or TV) or through subscriptions (like Paid LJ accounts, Cable TV, Satellite Radio, etc.)

They use up a lot of resources, and they are among the biggest incentives for people to upgrade. IMHO it doesn't make business sense. If someone is new to LJ, are they going to even be used to having tons of icons? If someone is using LJ, are they going to leave necessarily because they can't have more than 15 icons?

Why do we allow anybody, paid or not, to have more than one userpic at all?

For plus accounts, maybe. Not for basic accounts, IMO.
