LJ could already be considered to be in that position, since it allows a user to display a birthdate that may be a lie. LJ isn't responsible for verifying birthdays and I don't see how someone could reasonably make that argument in a court, but it does use them to cover its ass and say "oh, but we did not KNOW they were underage, they lied to us".

Eh, I think wording it as a weasel statement is better. Less expensive, less fuss.

It's none of anyone's business whether I am over 18 or not, and Livejournal should not assist in age discrimination beyond the extent to which Livejournal is, unfortunately, legally required to assist in age discrimination.

Livejournal isn't legally required to publicly disclose whether I am over 18, so Livejournal shouldn't publicly disclose whether I am over 18.

Communities that discriminate on age may technically be against Livejournal's acceptable use policy, and in any case shouldn't be encouraged.

The existing capability to flag a community as "adult material" addresses this kind of claimed need anyway.

Um. You're way off base here. What are my responsibilities as a maintainer or member of an adult-oriented community?:

Can't a community be marked as "adult content"? If not, then I think that's the real problem.

The can, but somehow that FAQ is still up there with the same instructions and no mentioning of adult content flagging. They may need to update their FAQ. Until then, it seems the policy of having to have a full birthdate on a profile is still in full force.

I'd rather have maintainers of adult communities warned that potential member exampleusername is underage according to their birth date when they manage memberships requests. Or underage users prevented from joining adult communities if that's not already the case. The FAQ seems to indicate they only see interstitials asking them to confirm their age.

I don't know if that privilege would ever be given out to any comm maintainer, since at the moment you need Support privs to see if someone is underage/under 18 if they don't already list that info publicly ( ... )

Also, I don't know if underage users are barred from joining adult comms (I don't think they are), but they won't be able to read entries in it even if they can join.

Underage users are bannend from joining - see last paragraph of http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=281

I do NOT want my birthdate appearing publicly. So, there are comms I don't join.

Since anyone can lie about date of birth, LJ is taking on a huge responsibility stating (as fact) "This user is 18+" The wording needs to be changed.

(Alternatively, I'd like the option to make only birth year visible. That would satisfy "over 18" requirements while keeping actual date private.)

You can only display the year.

Well, just the year isn't totally accurate, since not everyone's birthday is January 1st :P
