It's very easy to see what the date of the most recent post that's visible to you is: You look at the journal. There's no point in making "last updated" just duplicate that information. Instead, currently, "last updated" tells you when the last time the journal owner updated the journal's content. If you can't see the most recent post, it doesn't mean it was deleted - maybe it's filtered or private. Nothing particularly confusing about that once you're familiar with LJ.

Huh, I came here to reply to a comment you left and I don't see it. Did you delete it? Howcome?

Anyway, think about this: If someone posts a private entry, you can't see it, but their journal is updated. If they post something filtered to a particular friends group you're not on, you can't see it, but their journal is updated. And if they delete the post, you can't see it, but the journal is updated. As things are now, when you see the journal's been updated but can't see a recent post, you have no way of knowing what happened: Did they make a post other people can see but you can't, or a post nobody else can see (perhaps a draft they'll "publish" later), or did they delete a recent post? Now, if what you're suggesting happens, you'll be able to *know* that there's a post you can't see. Which do you think "opens up a can of worms", the current behavior or this suggestion?

Current behavior seems correct.

Apologies, i posted something regarding your previous reply - then i read over it, and...lets just say it didn't make any sense.

What i don't understand is what you say towards the end.

''Now, if what you're suggesting happens, you'll be able to *know* that there's a post you can't see. Which do you think "opens up a can of worms", the current behavior or this suggestion?''

i wish i could remember why i thought this was such a good idea, i really did think it was quite sensible.

I think i was thinking that I'd like to save people the ''heartache'' of asking friends why they updated but having checked their journal to be unable to find that new post.
I suppose it would open a can of worms either way.
