Private messages should show IP address.

Short, concise description of the idea
The 'send this user a message' feature should also show the IP address, to discourage abuse by trolls.

Full description of the ideaThe option to 'send this user a message' from a user's profile page is very handy; I've used it when I want to contact a friend ( Read more... )

Probably. I use a computer like people drive a car -- I can make it go, but don't understand what's under the hood. Some of the acronyms confuse me. I'll fix it; thank you.

I would want this to come with a warning to the sender, as is done for comments when IP address logging is active.

Agreed, and I included it in the suggestion -- A notification that 'your IP will be included with the message you send' may deter some small-minded trolls; honest users or friends of the recipient won't care.

I have private messaging turned off because of the totally illogical way LJ handles it - i.e they don't actually send you the message, just a notification that somewhere in your inbox is a message (and yes, I keep my cleared out but even so there can be 30+ at a time and so a message is not easy to find).

However, that aside, I think this would be a good idea.

For me, they are a bit of a mess with the extra html because I get plain text emails, but the content was there starting.... 6th-Nov-2008, which was also the day of the new profile release.

Want me to PM you? Maybe it's only working for certain users or those with certain settings?

It makes sense that the same settings exist for PM's as exist for comments to your journal.
