While I don't use LJ much anymore myself, I do try to keep up with my friends' LJs with RSS. My feeds from other sources display videos inline, but since lj-embed isn't even a valid tag, my reader strips it out and I get no indication that there was a video there.
Most feed readers strip out bad html according to their capabilities of displaying media and their security settings, so there's no reason not to inline the embed into the feeds.
Even if the feed provided enough information for me to fetch the iframe, I could write a plugin to my feed reader, but as it stands now, the lj-embed tells my reader nothing about the actual content of the post.
