I don't get it. If you want to track the entry, then just...track the entry?

You're only allowed a limited number of tracks though. That can run short really really quick if you're a prolific poster and reader.

Well, if this feature was implemented, I still think that it should count as "tracking" - perhaps a checkbox in the "Leave a comment" interface that effectively adds the entry to your tracked ones. If entries tracked through this feature didn't count for the limit, but as "comment notifications" instead, clever people like myself would just leave an irrelevant comment on every entry they'd like to track and circumvent the tracking limit.

perhaps a checkbox in the "Leave a comment" interface

A number of forums I've participated in had a similar option, and you could choose in your preferences whether the checkbox defaulted to selected or not.

That would work best for me.

Here's a drawback:

If I subscribe to this, it sounds like it'd be all or nothing, yes? So if I subscribe to it, and then post a comment in, say, metaquotes, I could end up with a couple hundred comment notification emails.

And really-- [http://www.livejournal.com/tools/recent_comments.bml] has the list of recent comments I've posted, so I can just jump down there and click to see whether anyone's posted replies to those specific comment threads.

This is my concern as well. I post in some really high-traffic communities and if I got an email every time someone posted on something I posted on, I'd fill up my inbox very quickly.
