Short, concise description of the idea
Create an LJ Talk (jabber) interface for the new private message feature.

Full description of the ideaIt should be possible to private message someone from the LJ Talk interface. One way would be some sort of command you can send to Frank. But a better way, I think, ( Read more... )

Do you think that will be an issue for a jabber interface in particular, beyond whatever issues there might be with PMing in general? It hadn't occured to me...

I don't know about that, but there would have to be some way of gracefully bouncing messages that don't arrive due to opt-out settings. Frank would have to attempt to put in the private message, but if he didn't get it to work for reason of opt-out or whatever, or hell, reaching the limit, he'd have to notify that BOUNCE it did not work for whatever reason. Because it's bad to have something silently fail.

Am I the only one who thinks consolidating private messages into LJ Talk is a good idea? Who needs the added fuss of a PM interface that won't suit everyone when there's an open protocol that LJ already supports that can do the job better, with plenty of clients people already use out there?

The problem with moving everything to LJ Talk is that it won't send messages to offline users (this is one issue that the suggestion above addresses).

The problem with moving everything to LJ Talk is that it won't send messages to offline users (this is one issue that the suggestion above addresses).

That's a major bug in LiveJournal's implementation of Jabber that needs to be fixed, then, since XMPP requires that feature, IIRC.
