Title
iPhone/iPod Touch optimized version?

Short, concise description of the idea
It'd be great to see an iPhone/iPod Touch optimized version of LJ.

Full description of the idea
Much like the Facebook site is optimized for the iPhone/iPod Touch, it would be great to see the same thing happen of LJ.

There's a mobile version of the site at http://www.livejournal.com/mobile/ , but it's (deliberately) very basic. Whether it's good for you depends on what you want to do, whether you want it to look good, etc. :D

I expect that since you're asking about the iPhone specifically that you're looking for a good-looking mobile site. I think I'd like that too, but obviously it shouldn't be too large, and we shouldn't have it replace the text-only version, because that's still useful. :D

Though I can understand wanting something a little more pretty than LJmobile, and I'm all in favour of that, I'd rather LJ didn't develop a version that's solely for the iPhone. It reeks a little too much of "Best viewed in Internet Explorer", if you see what I mean. As long as LJmobile is compatible with all major phone browsers, I don't mind, though.

I see a problem: Device/browser specific webpages are a Bad Thing given that there are specific coding standards to ensure usability on all devices and platforms.

A better suggestion happens to be a two-parter:

  • LJ cleans up their HTML so it validates with the W3C validator, and refuse to accept tags in posts that do not conform strictly to the applicable HTML version.
  • Apple ensures the browser shipped on their mobile devices complies with current W3C standards.

If you notice your mobile device is unable to render pages that do pass the validator linked above, you should complain to Apple first and wait for a fix before complaining to sites that don't work with your device.

I posted a duplication suggestion here. (Yours wasn't publicly viewable at the time.)

Two useful links:

* Apple's documentation for iPhone web developers, which would help the LiveJournal dev team get started: http://developer.apple.com/iphone/devcenter/

* Six Apart has already made an iPhone interface for Moveable Type: http://plugins.movabletype.org/imt/. Maybe LiveJournal could leverage their work?

The facebook interface is great. The mobile interface requires me to click into each friend's entry to read it, which is really time consuming on my crummy cell phone internet connection.

I'd love an LJ application for the iPhone.
