They took them out for Basic and Plus users but left them for Paid users. My guess is they did it to increase the ad views on the homepage by redirecting users who needed to log in there.

So, loss of ad revenue goes into your list of problems, I guess.

I don't understand, how do they know what kind of user am I if I'm not logged in.

If you are not logged in they assume you are not a user at all. :) Once you log in they know who you are.

Actually, whether the login box shows on the navstrip depends on if the journal you're *looking* at is a Paid journal or not, because as you say, LJ doesn't know otherwise.

I think they removed that login link in order to make money, not to make life more convenient for users. So I doubt it's coming back, much as I would like to see it. Right now having the login link is a paid account privilege, so it's possible they're trying to get more people to upgrade to paid. It's also possible that they want to force more people to log in via the login page, where the ads are.

If I'm not mistaken, logged off users see ads in both free and plus journals. So, what do they lose if user logs in directly from his journal or friends page?

Yes. I never used it myself, but I also never saw any official explanations for why it was removed and can't really think of any good ones.

It is very inconvenient to have to go to a whole different web page to log in and then go to the community of interest. They should just reestablish this back onto the pages.
