It is my understanding that billing things to your cell phone is fairly common outside of the United States. While I'm not sure you could get US cell carriers behind this, it does sound like a good idea.

US carriers already do this. This is why you can get ringtones and such from third-parties.

I don't have this problem, as I live in the US and have a credit card, but this is such a good idea - I know a lot of people on my friends list who are always begging someone to renew their lj account and then send them money in the mail. Kind of inconvenient. :(

I don't know why no-one's come up with this idea before, because it'd be bloody useful (not for me, but for others).
