Changing search methods

Short, concise description of the idea
Change searching to go by community updates or members instead of creation dates.

Full description of the ideaCurrently, searching is extremely limited. Only 500 communities can turn up at a time, but instead of being the biggest or most active communities, these are simply chosen ( Read more... )

I believe the new search tool will do this, once it comes out. if not, it really should.

That would be a huge relief if that's the case. This has been bugging me ever since I learned why my communities never turned up on searches.

If you're searching by interests, this already happens. For example, if you search the interest "college," it lists the most recently updated community all the way down to the least recently, putting the "never updated" ones at the bottom. Same goes for personal journals.

Actually, that's not correct. The journals do go in order of update, but they are not the 500 most recently updated journals -- the 500 journals that are ordered by most recent update are only the first 500 journals ever made with that interest.

That's what I want to fix -- it seems really counterintuitive to me that newer or more active journals can never, ever replace the first 500. If you created a new journal with "college" in the community, and updated it every ten minutes, it would never show up on a search for "college". Ever. :\

Ahhhh...I did not realize that. Very interesting.

For what it's worth, I just tried a bunch of keywords to see if I could find an interest that has more than 500 communities listed, and I couldn't do it. Not that it changes your suggestion in any way, but it's become an interesting challenge...
