Streamlined installation of counters

Title
Streamlined installation of counters

Short, concise description of the idea
It's preposterous that non-code users who have specifically picked S2 have to figure out code in order to do something as simple as add a counter.

Um, there are counters that don't require CSS. Can't you just stick a counter in a future-dated entry? Or use a layout that supports counter code?

I tried the layout that supports counter code: it offers a one line entry box for counter code. All of the counters I looked at were eight to twelve lines in length.

Future-dated entries look unprofessional. I don't care for them.

I guess I'm just a little confused why LJ doesn't offer a built in counter when MySpace does.

Have you tried Smooth Sailing? It has free text boxes that allow you to enter HTML and I'm pretty sure it's long enough for a counter, considering I could add lines and lines of links.

About your suggestion: I don't want built-in counters. No, thanks. As imc said, this isn't what LJ is about. Now improve the way counters can be implemented, why not?

I don't find that preposterous at all; it's simply not what LiveJournal is about. (I very rarely visit the actual journal page of anyone anyway.)

I know nothing about counters, but surely all you need is an

You're right, you'd do better on MySpace.

I think changing the text input areas to a textarea could be helpful. But I do not want built-in counters, and I think any CSS problems you're experiencing has more to do with the counter you've chosen than LiveJournal and S2.

I don't get what the problem is with a built in counter. No one says you HAVE to turn it on. If you don't want it, leave it off. Those of us that would like to have it could turn it on with a couple of mouse clicks. BOOM! Everyone's happy. And by the way, LJ is about whatever the author of the blog wants it to be about ( ... )

I use a counter that is only an image. I guess it depends on the service and what kind of data they're collecting. Even if the code were several lines long, you could probably just delete the line breaks, making it all one line. (Whether or not the counter code box has a character limit is different, but I haven't looked to see what it is.)

Counters, BTW, are not just IMG tags.

The ones at http://www.easytrafficcounter.com/ do seem to be (second site I found when doing a random search for counter sites).

They generally have a couple of lines of code for the browser to send a brief cookie to the counter's tally site.

And that code is JavaScript, which isn't allowed on LiveJournal.
