Perhaps make it an extra paid feature, like extra user pics. That would make it an easy option for fic writers, but won't bog down the space with the users who wouldn't use the feature.

I wholeheartedly support this idea for paid and permanent members. Like you, I'd be concerned about the abuse potential of this with basic and plus accounts.

I think comparing the post size to picture size might be a bit of a bad comparison. I think the full text of posts ends up in the database, whereas only the location of a given picture is in the database. There's a world of difference there, and it might really affect things.

Gallery pictures = Scrapbook = stored on LJ's servers, hence their being mentioned in the same sentence as phone posts.

This was meant to be a reply to you; I guess I hit the wrong thing at the wrong time and it wound up in a separate thread.

Right, for things like images, videos, and voice posts, the actual media file isn't stored "inside" the entry. The entry length is only concerned with whatever HTML code is required to have the image/video/voice post be displayed or linked in the entry.

It may require some database structure altering, which will put veeery much strain on servers.

It would be good to see it for Paid/Perm accts, though.
