I have no clue how hard this would be to code, but I would love to have it and would make much use of it.

This would actually be a very handy thing to have in the little popup boxes associated with each username.

Although I think it would be harder to code, I'd really like to have the ability to associate my own private tag with any user, not just those on my friends list. There are many people that I recognize on LJ but haven't friended for one reason or another.

Oh. My. God. Yes.

My favourite thing about Facebook (apart from the photo tagging) is that you can make a note about how you know someone, who you know them through, etc.

Yes. I don't use Facebook, but when I was looking with my brother at his, I saw that and was like OMG I WANT FOR LJ.

This reads like the same suggestions to me; that one's been deferred, so I'll put another thumbs-up on this one.

I'd note that the actual display on the Friends Page is going to be layout-dependent; behind the scenes, what this is asking is threefold: (a) another field on (probably) the UserLite class (so that it can be available as User or Friend), (b) a way to enter data into this field on both the Edit Friends and Add Friend pages, and (c) an alteration to the default styles to display this field in the Friends Page.
