Prevent numerous emailings of minor edits, etc.

I do wish there was a way to make this more clear to newbies. (Takes me back to when I was one, frankly.)

This goes into that category of the many, many things newbies have no clue about when they first get a journal -- and join communities. (sigh)

A better tutorial for using LJ might help.

Might.

But if a newbie won't read, then nothing is going to help, I suspect...

In this post at the_lj_herald, they refer to two upcoming changes on LJ that may be a step towards addressing this:
  • New users will be auto-added to their own friends lists so that a welcome post can be displayed at the top of their friends pages. This post will tell them how to add a friend, what the various userinfo icons mean and will mention potentially useful links. ( Source).
  • The Quick Tour to LJ is being revamped. (Old version)

Both these changes seem to offer venues of passing such information to new users.

In general, it is wise to assume that anything sent from your computer over the Internet is received by somebody else.

On the bright side, on LJ it sometimes takes several months for the comment e-mails to arrive anyway. ;-)
