1. Removes patronising tone from original message.
have the original text changed so that it's not as patronizing. i don't like it either and several people i know on LJ also dislike it.

2. Allows mutual friends to contact other mutual friends who do not display their email addresses in their profile.
a "PM" service is coming LJ SoonTM ( link: Plans for 2007 - "Connecting").

So 'PM' stands for Private Messaging? So that would mean we could send a message here at LJ to another LJ user -- much the same as emailing someone? (I'm sorry to be so stupid, but I really don't know...)

If there's potentially another service (PM) that would be available for contacting people here at LJ, I'd love that! I don't IM (ever), so email is the best option for me. As we all know, pPeople with Paid (and similar) accounts can be reached via their @livejournal.com emails -- but others (obviously) cannot...

And, yes -- I like the idea of being able to customize the nudge feature. I might use this if I could type my own message! The current message does tend to be insulting (or offensive) to some people, so I've avoided using it to date...

Good idea!

yep. PM = Private Messaging.

People with Paid (and similar) accounts can be reached via their @livejournal.com emails
most. the ability to disable it does exist, but only for those who can use it.

whee.

I think it's possible to disable it as a free account, in case someone buys you paid time to email you, but I'd imagine the number of people whom that would apply to is small. :)

I think this is a fine idea, but I'm curious -- what's the current nudge message?

The message reads:

Hey username,

Your mutual friend charliemc has noticed that you last updated
your journal on LiveJournal xx weeks ago! Be a friend and go post,
at http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml

Sincerely,
The LiveJournal Team

I'm afraid I've had friends who really ranted about it... (smile) So I've never nudged (that I recall).
