Short, concise description of the idea
Currently, there are only two settings for tags editing permissions: (1)tag entries with existing tags, and (2)create new tags as well as add/remove tags for entries.

I propose to split up (2), and have a separate option for removing tags from entries.

Yes, please. It would be very good especially since there is a 500 tag limit on tags in a community. If users can create their own tags, they can inadvertently create duplicate tags simply by making a typo.

This won't help that, because once a tag is created, it remains, even if you delete the mistake. In order for that to work, a tag would have to be deleted once it was associated with no posts. (Not a half bad idea in its self.)

What I mean is, (if I'm reading the original request right) is that they want to separate the ability to make new tags from the ability to delete tags. That way you can give members the ability to delete tags (say for 'lost book' once it's found) without letting them make up a bunch of useless new tags.

Yes, exactly! Are you in whatwasthatbook, too? That was one of the communities that I was thinking of when I made this suggestion.

I got around to setting my tag permissions the other day and was rather surprised to find two very different sorts of activities stuck together under the same permission bit, so yeah.

Mm, I like splitting things up like this much better than my original suggestion, which didn't take things as far.

I really like this suggestion. I think it useful, because seriously, I don't like the idea of allowing members to create tags (because there's a lot of extra material there), but I do like to share out the work (so I don't kill myself tagging everything all the time). Separating the removal function would definitely make life easier, I think.

Yes please. I've accidentally tagged things with the wrong tag in communities and then not been able to undo it, very frustrating.
