I like the idea. I don't think the potential for abuse is a big deal - anyone could link to something like that from the main entry, couldn't they?

I was actually thinking of suggesting something similar - making the Google Maps search a ticky box. Most people I've seen use the feature to write things like "home" which, of course, either won't google or will google to a saved location of the reader. The idea would be that it would, by default, not be linked to Google Maps - but the option would be available.

the text label will only be different in the poster's layout though. not everyone else who is reading the entry on their friend's page.

so. it should stay as location-based data.

however, it's been suggested before to add such fields as "currently reading" and the like.

+1. Most of my friends put things like "Home", "work", "in front of the TV" and other things not useful to link in Google Maps. I'd like an option not to link at all included here.

People on my friends list write things like "my living room" anyway, so the link is pretty useless.

Your first concern worries me though. If there's gonna be a choice, it should be of a few pre-sceened sites, not anything anyone wants.

I agree. The usefulness of Google maps is only for those of us who frequently post from different locations described by Google's Map function. Most of us post from the same 1-3 locations, almost always within the same Google realm anyway.
