Title
Skype Option for Voice Posts

Short, concise description of the idea
LJ should try to offer a Skype screenname or number users can call to make voiceposts.

Full description of the ideaThe reason why I suggested this was because I'm currently teaching abroad in China and don't really have access to the voice post numbers available. I tried ( Read more... )

You can do this with Gizmo by calling ljvoicepost.

Not skype, but it's free and works well.

my html is not so good today

"uze gizmo" is not a sufficient answer for this suggestion.

i thought i read somewhere that someone was able to voicepost using skype. they had to send it to a specific number and tweak some settings or something. how exactly to do this, i have no idea.

Skype can call phone numbers, but you have to pay for the priviledge.

actually, i think they used the SIP number of the gizmo ljvoicepost user and was able to connect that way.

however, with recent attempts to contact the gizmo voicepost user, it seems to be offline. this may have changed since my last test though.

To my knowledge, Gizmo still not working foxfirefey April 13 2006, 21:25:32 UTC
No, it hasn't changed in the past five days, and I rechecked it just now. Here is my original support request on the matter. I believe at the time I made it, the "ljvoicepost" user appeared as Away or a red equivalent such as "Do Not Disturb" or "Custom", but I'm not certain.

But currently, "ljvoicepost" shows up on my list as "Invisible" and calling it through Gizmo doesn't produce a response. I've been told to set the program's "DTMF Tones" option to "In-band", but doing so doesn't fix it. Calling other Gizmo users, however, still works.

I think this would be very successful if this was implemented. Because I think it would be able to be available on skype because iit has already been set up on "Gismo" however this is a program that most people would not use however "Skype" is more of a universal application.

As far as I can tell, the major issue is that Gizmo is Open-Source, whereas Skype has a closed protocol, and so you can't set up an interface.

It's kinda like trying to call someone in a country when you don't have an english to whatever dictionary - LJ can't talk to Skype users because it can't tell what language they're speaking.

This suggestion has at this time been rejected by site employees, since you can use Gizmo.
