Good suggestion overall; specifically, I like the "out of chronological order" wording.

One problem/issue involved is that older clients will still call it "backdating," which could confuse people even further, but I don't think that's a big problem.

When replying, make sure you're in the full options section (click more options if you are in the quick reply box). When yousee a page with just the comment you are replying to and not others, look up beside the subject box. You should see a smiley face. If you click it, you will see a few icons you can choose from,. They merely add a little character to your reply.

It's fine as it is. If it's just friend's only, they can easily post it as a public post. Generally, there's no reason to backdate that entry, because random passerbyers aren't going to see the friend's only posts anyway.

It's not that big of a deal.

Here's my suggestion: having a little question mark that will make a pop up page to a brief explanation of what backdating is (similar to what they do for user pictures...)
