Something I forgot to mention as a benefit:

If a user currently has chosen not to give LJ either their birthday info or their location info, because they want to display only one of the two pieces of information, fixing this would allow LJ to collect more accurate statistical and demographic data about its users. Users could give LJ both pieces of information, while choosing to make only one public.

I like this idea.

I don't care if people know my birthday. It's just a day. But displaying your location... hello, ever heard of Net stalkers?

Agreed. Connecting birthday with location just seems so random.

i agree.

i also really want to separate email address and messenger information. i'm quite happy for anyone to know my lj email address, but only want my friends to see my messenger information. right now i have to set it all to friends only, and then put my address in my bio. annoying.

Yep, I like it.

I'd really love to be able to decide between public, private, or Friends-only for my location. If I were able to make my location Friends-only, I'd include my town and not just my state. There's lots of different parts of my user profile that I can see different security settings for, but it would probably make things needlessly complicated. So yes, this is a good start, and would make me happy. :o)
