if your style definition and browser settings use different colors for visited and unvisited links, you can use that to see which postings received new comments since you last read them.

check the "Append &nc=xx to comment URLs" option on your "Personal Info" page (http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml). if that option is set, the number of comments is appended to the url of the comment page. when new comments are added to a post, that number (and therefore the url) changes, so that the color turns from "visited" to "unvisited" again.

I'd say have a look at the new 'Append &nc=xx to comment URL' in your Personal Info (http://www.livejournal.com/editinfo.bml) to trick your browser into displaying comments pages with new comments as unvisited links.
