Make renaming free...but with a little catch.

Short, concise description of the idea
Allow a user to change their username for free, but with a catch; they can only do it once a year or once every two years, so they have to pick wisely.

This won't happen. Renaming involves a lot of back-end stuff which will end up costing LJ time and money--and a lot of it, if free renames were allowed so often--if users don't pay for a rename.

I've had people give me tokens for a rename because I mentioned off-hand that the never-used account with my usual online handle had finally been purged. Was a nice surprise; I used the tokens for icon space instead, though.

I like this idea, even once every three years, but I disagree with having a "formally known as so and so" bit because I would only change my username to maintain anonymity and that would defeat the objective.

There are expenses involved with renaming, so it only makes sense that there's a cost involved... (As others have pointed out.)

I understand the hardship for some regarding the cost, but I think I still feel it's fair.

Ugh, I submitted a reasonable suggestion - as I'm sure many have - but it's been a year without activity in this community.

I believe LJ has given up on the English-speaking world.
