If I understand right, you're asking LJ to come up with a whole new layout system that doesn't require the user to know anything about S2 or HTML based on the idea that designing a layout is something like using rich text (it's not), and to support both this and the current layout system. That's more than quite a bit of work. It's just not feasible. (Unless I'm misunderstanding you. It's 3am, so that's very possible.)

Facebook is not doing anything at all like that. Being able to upload a timeline pic and avatar is more akin to uploading userpics and inserting a custom header, which LJ users can do right now within the current system. If that's the kind of flexibility you're asking for, it's already there and Googleable.

Now, more accessible tutorials for S2 would be lovely...
