Rollback on 88?

Short, concise description of the idea
Release 88 makes LJ very difficult to use; I support a rollback.

Thanks so much for your detailed and thoughtful feedback. Good news: As you may know, there are plans to restore the comment subject lines. Other issues you raised are being discussed. Anyone interested can see a staff post on the topic here:

Downside: getting rid of a lot of code modernization, especially on the comments front, which haven't been updated for absolutely years.

Doesn't do it any good to be modern if a lot of users can't even use it or it gives them migraines!

Please explain why the old code couldn't have been replaced with new code that retained the same functionality as the old code (i.e. subject lines, userpic selector that worked, preview and spell check, same layout, etc. etc. etc.).

I am not LJ staff, and I do not have any knowledge of their priorities, goals, or intentions. I am a volunteer for technical support.

As a programmer, I can tell you making interface changes optional is pretty much a non-starter. It's a huge amount of work and doubles the testing. If they had the resources to test multiple interfaces, I would certainly hope we wouldn't have gotten...what we have now.

That said, I fully support a rollback, because this new interface is awful. No subjects, no preview, no "I'll format my own HTML kthx" checkbox, and no little icons so I can't give you a thumbs up like I used to do for suggestions I agreed with.

Man, it's like three quarters of the commenting interface is just plain missing.

I agree that this recent change was a very large step backward. I understand that LiveJournal wanted to replace complex crufty old code with new code, but I think they really botched it by releasing the new code with a lot of important functionality missing. I would support a temporary rollback, now that they've learned what a lot of the problems with the new code are, until they can improve it to the point where we can move to the new code without losing features or usability.

Overall, the LJ experience was significantly better in a lot of ways before this downgrade.
