A lot of peole want to rename their accounts , but they can't , because they don't use WebMoney or Visa cards. Can we change it?

The usual thing that comes up when free renames are proposed: I've been told that the process of renaming an account does take a significant amount of work on the server end of things, so in order to cover that cost, LiveJournal would have to get the money from somewhere.

This seems like a good compromise to me. =) I would even go for one free rename every two or three years of continuous Paid (or Permanent) time, much in the way that Loyalty userpics are granted for continuous Paid time.

Ugh, no thank you. Tumblr allows renames for free and it's horrible. I can never keep track of who anyone is.

the problem with that is that once you changed your name the previous one just dissapears and doesn't redirects you to the new blog. which is why i what i hate about it.

I'm getting two separate ideas from your suggestion - are you saying people don't wish to pay (lower price, don't charge), or that it is difficult to pay with the systems currently in place? I am not sure of how exactly LiveJournal earns money, so I can't comment on the price-lowering bit, but there are more ways to pay than just Visa and the like.

How about allowing each member only one free name change. or something like that? I've seen that elsewhere, so people feel that they have that option, just in case, but money could also be made from those who frequently change their names.

I do also agree with Yaaresse about paid members getting free name changes however; how about combining both ideas? Paid members get one free name change?
