Definitely a default that should fall the other way.

Yes, default this sub to off for newly-created accounts.

The subscribe option is linked at the top of other users' user pic pages, so it's not like it's hard to find if people decide they do want the notifs.

I had no idea that new accounts were automatically friended to themselves now... must have changed since the last time I created an account.

But yeah, I totally agree with this original subscription. It was probably a more useful feature back in the day when free accounts had 3 icons and paid had 6. But it's the kind of thing that should be opt-in, not opt-out default.
