This is a good idea.

Another drawback: While I would use it for sure, having the button there would be no guarantee that anyone else would use it. Some people just ignore these kinds of features and/or aren't aware they even exist.

I don't have any strong feelings one way or the other, but just wanted to suggest: you could do something similar with existing features by adding a one-question poll to each entry. It might be more work than what you suggest, but it's doable.

I see this as more like OpenDiary's 'silent note' -- sometimes people have written stuff where either it's too beautiful or too raw to say much, but you want to let them know you're reading. Some in my community do this by saying "pebble", which evokes the Jewish tradition of leaving pebbles on a gravestone to show one has visited. But that requires explanation, whereas an 'i read this' button does not.

The poll question could say "pebble" or "I read this" or "0123456789" or anything you like, so I'm not sure what you're getting at here.

What I'm getting at is that Open Diary had a 'silent note' option, which was avaialble for readers of any given post without the poster having to separately do anything. And also, polls take up a lot of vertical space.

I'd prefer not to see something like this.

You make no mention whether this would be an "always there" feature, or an LJ specific tag. My main objection would be if it was always there and we couldn't opt out.
