I think (and someone with technical knowhow can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) that the reason for the limits on tags is due to database limitations. In fact, a few years ago, I recall that a few communities had to be suspended temporarily because they had more tags than LiveJournal's databases could handle at the time (the suspensions were lifted as soon as the technical issue was resolved).

I don't know what LiveJournal's database situation is now as to whether it could handle a significant increase in the maximum number of tags. How much of an increase are you looking for? 500 more tags? 1000 more tags? 2000 more tags?

That all said, if it's feasible from a technical standpoint, I would be for this.

Ah, I was not aware of that. Even just another 1000 would be great, though, and odds are few would use it.

Some communities really NEED more tags. I'd think that there are so many communities that don't use them at all (from my experience) that there could be a balance somewhere...

I like the idea of offering additional tags for communities, only.

If LJ can actually handle it, this would be great.

After release 71, you can actually filter community by post author, which may make it easier for you to not hit the tag quota.

Helpful, but not exactly the same thing. In some communities, that would require keeping track of every journal name individually. If multiple people normally shared a tag, you'd have to search all of their usernames, if you knew all of them to begin with. The search function is very, very useful, but it doesn't serve the same function as the tag system.
