The easiest workaround I can think of is to set a minimum security level for all future posts of friends-only or private. It would thus make all entries (including ones from Twitter and Facebook) post to at least that minimum security level. You will then have to go back and edit any entries you want to have a different security level, but it's better in my mind to be too private and then let up a little, as opposed to being too public and then trying to lock down after the fact.

The thing is, currently protected tweets are not posted to the journal at all.

... Ohhhhh. I misread, then! Mea culpa. :) So, since Twitter is completely binary ALL PUBLIC or ALL PROTECTED, yeah, ugh.

Exactly. It will not cross-post Friends Only Facebook status updates or Protected Tweets.

I'm asking all this because I use FB to keep my family up to date on my infant son... but I don't want them anywhere near access to my LJ. Yet, I'd like a history kept of those tweets/statuses for future reference, thus why moving them to LJ would be ideal. Doing it manually to LJ really sucks.

I'd settle for getting all public tweets. They're currently suppressing public account to public account replies.

Since I have no public tweets or public entries on Facebook, that does not help me. I'm not willing to go public on any of those, nor am I willing to give family access to my private LJ. Family is on FB, since it's more public, but I still want some illusion of privacy there.

If LJ would allow Ping.fm back in, it would do all the crossposting. But, since they won't, an in-house method would be nice. I've settled for manually moving everything every few weeks, but that's quite tedious.

Most Twitter import clients can't do anything with protected tweets - I can't actually think of any that do (after about 2 minutes of thinking about it, so it's not like I investigated). I don't know anything about this, but my guess is that the Twitter API either doesn't allow grabbing protected tweets or the process to do so is just so complicated that no one can invest that kind of time.

I'd be fine with simply FB to LJ. I don't actually like Twitter. I was able to get protected tweets to auto-post to FB, to test if it was possible, so I included Twitter in the request.
