I think the existing Rich Text editor makes this unneccessary for entries. It would be useful for those who prefer to use the HTML editor, but perhaps not worth the development effort when there is another solution available.

For comments, it would be useful since there is currently no alternative to typing in the code. This is a different solution to the problem addressed in this suggestion, adding RT to the comment form.

+1, but:

1. We have two buttons in the HTML editor already. One of them does nothing (embed media). Could be easily replaced with "insert link" button.

2. And we don't have lj-user button anywhere...

3. As for comments -- yes at least 'link' and 'picture' buttons will help.

As well as the HTML editor, there is a Rich Text editor that does most of what you ask for. On http://www.livejournal.com/update.bml look at the top right corner of the large box where you type the entry. There are two tabs; one is labelled "Rich Text". Click that tab to access the extra editing features.

If you're not seeing two tabs, there is something wrong, and you can open a Support request to ask for help.

No, that's what the Rich Text Editor is for. Keep the HTML editor simple and bug free.

PLEASE!!! Well said -- I agree.

I don't mind coding my own entries here at LiveJournal. If people don't want to code, they should use the RTE.

Embed media is used to insert videos from sites like YouTube

These options already exist in the rich text editor. -1 to attempting to put them in the HTML editor. I like it clean and simple, and these codes are not that hard.

No, no, no. I would already gladly get rid of the 'insert image' and 'embed media' buttons.

If someone doesn't want to type link, they shouldn't use the HTML Editor. The RTE has lots of shiny buttons that do things for you and make it super-easy to update. I don't see the point in making the HTML Editor slower to load and cram it with unnecessary buttons.

As for comments, I'm fine with it as long as it's opt out because I don't want to see extra-buttons I don't need every time I post a comment. There are already way too many, let's not make the situation worse.
