Please either give us back the portal as default or render current the LJ homepage customizable, so that we can choose which communities/ journals we see posts from when we log in.

Yes -- very well stated. We had CONTROL with the Portal, so why not with the Home page?

And I can't see any advantage in suggesting we return to the unsupported Portal, rather than address this logically...

In the meantime, the secure login page (https://www.livejournal.com/login.bml) redirects to a much quieter page on login, and doesn't display ads when logged out.

The home page is a very logical place to have a high level of user customization. I hardly ever use it because it just doesn't meet my requirements at all.
