Title
Decrease the space taken up by poll results

Short, concise description of the idea
For the sake and sanity of people's Friends pages, there needs to be a way to decrease the space taken up by the results for polls that aren't lj-cut.

Wow, I'd LOVE to see this one happen. Or could they just automatically be lj-cut?

I find it MADDENING when my friends use un-cut polls. (sigh)

You know... you just made me think of another possible way around this:

The poll can be posted without an lj-cut, BUT... once someone's voted in it where the results would display, then the results would unconditionally display for that person under an lj-cut. It would have to be an option, and might be complex to work out, since it would definitely involve styles tweaking, but... if there was a way to make that work, I think it would be a good compromise, since it's more convenient to answer polls when they're right on the Friends/Recent Entries pages.

YES ! ! !

That would be PERFECT, if the coding wasn't crazy hard...

I don't mind seeing the poll outside the cut, but the RESPONSES drive me nuts (and almost always BREAK my view)!!!

Exactly! The results never break my journal's style, but something as small as a one-question/five-options poll takes up a full page with the results (whereas the unvoted poll takes up only about a third of that). And with the way it displays, I can see how it would break someone else's page style.

I'm surprised no one else has brought this up before, but it looks like this has been an annoyance for other folks, too.

Yes please.

I always end up lj-cutting the polls after a day or so because they're such an eyesore.

Just to put the other point of view... imc May 18 2010, 13:15:39 UTC
Meh. I never really had a problem with poll results on my Friends page. Can't see any good way of making it more compact without also making it difficult to read.

Another option would be to just put the poll title there with a "view results" link. But to be honest I might find the extra click needed a bit irritating. I guess it might work if it were in full on the entry page but had just the link on the Journal or Friends Page views.

Yeah, I can see that. I already have to vote twice in order for my votes to "take" because of NoScript (due to XSS blocking), and while it's little more than a minor annoyance for me, I can see where having to do extra page loads just to see the results would put off some folks.

Which is why, however it's implemented, it should be optional, as Azz explained above. My alternate suggestion, which is in a comment upstream from the one I linked you to, might be great for that as a style option.
