Community maintainers should be given the ability to lock entries originally posted by members as public.

YES!

Again, frankly, a community is owned by the moderator (or moderators). If they want to make an entry private (un-viewable), they should be able to do so.

If a maintainer mistakenly makes an entry private

You can't have private entries in a community - the only options are public or members-only.

Possible user-maintainer locking wars as per the above

Maybe the comments on this suggestion can offer some suggestions for resolving that.

Thanks for the link! I think that suggestion is a good idea as well and has some similar mechanics to it in the maintainer vs member realm.

Also; mean to fix those mentions of 'private' to f-locked, thanks for the heads up.

SO MUCH YES.

Edit: for the record, speaking as a maintainer of a community that is now all friends locked but wasn't previously, and would love to be able to set the older posts that are still visible to locked, without bothering people about posts they made in 2004 or whatever (if those people are even still on LJ).
