There was certainly nothing wrong with takeaway. It was cheap and convenient, and it beat cleaning up the usual shattered dishes on the floor or else a kitchen on fire whenever Harry was clumsy. Which was most of the time. But the food was delicious, from chicken lo mein to curry. With a variety of cuisines to choose from, he didn’t have to worry about starving to death. Takeaway was perfect to satisfy hunger. It was a meal to set down on his coffee table while he flipped through the channels of the telly. There was nothing to worry about because this was how life had always been. And Harry was perfectly happy with that.

Until he received an owl one day.

Harry was reading a magazine about cars in the bedroom of his flat when there was a tap against the window. Frowning, he looked up and gasped. His eyes widened as he stared at the small, anxious tawny that was waiting for entrance. He had not received his post like this in a year. Harry quickly crossed the room, opening the window to let the owl in. He would rather not have his nosy neighbors question him about why such a night creature was making such a ruckus by tapping on glass. And it would not do any good to have complaints sent to the landlord either.

He untied the roll of parchment from the owl’s leg before reading his letter. And then Harry simply gaped at it, rereading the text again and again. The message was short but written sharply and cleanly in black ink.

One should know that takeaway will clog your arteries. Try cooking. You’ll turn a dinner for one into a feast for many.

Someone was watching him, that was for sure. Who else would know where he lived, or for that matter, what he ate? And who was this person to give him bloody advice when he could take care of himself? Harry found this quite insulting as he crumpled up the parchment and threw it next to the empty carton of what used to be filled with fried rice from last night’s meal.

He had left the wizarding world for a reason. Not that he didn’t keep in contact with his friends and those he cared about. Sure, he found time to visit Andromeda’s to see Teddy, or to have a chat with Ron and Hermione at the Three Broomsticks. These events happened occasionally, of course, and the rest of the time Harry had for himself was spent in the busy Muggle city of Dundee. He would just know when it was time to go back. It was a silent agreement between everyone whenever Harry came back, but never had they once owled him to do so, or to remind him. This was an arrangement Harry preferred to keep. He didn’t particularly want to grace his presence in a magical world where people only saw him for his fame and money.

But someone was trying to seek him out. Someone perhaps wanted him to come back. Maybe for good. For what reason, Harry had no idea. This was absolutely bizarre. No, Harry would stay in Dundee. He liked it here, as it was a place where no one knew him.

It wasn’t until Harry glanced down at the pathetic takeaway carton when he sighed. A dinner for one, indeed. He tried not to let that fact bother him as he picked up the carton, tossing it into the rubbish bin. For once, he wished he didn’t feel so alone.
