Really liking what you've written up here. Very well thought-out. Wish there were more Merlin metas out there; I almost never stumble upon one as long as this when browsing Tumblr, which is a bit upsetting when compared to what Supernatural fandom has.

I'm hoping part 3 will be up soon! :)

PS: Thanks for the 4.09 screencaps. First time I see it actually, since as of S4 I pretty much fast-forwarded through all Gwen scenes, to my shame. And yeah... like you said, that smile does look pretty sad. Maybe I should man up and actually watch the scene to see for myself. XD

Thanks for tuning in and saying such nice stuff; I like doing a lot of meta digging around. I haven't started part three, but knowing someone will read it will hopefully light ye olde fires. How did you find this, if you don't mind me asking?

No shame unto you; Angel Coulby has dead chemistry withe very single one of her male co-stars. The episode is meh, I have several problems with it, but it was Merlin's reaction during the HAY I'MNA MARRY GWEN scenes which was very interesting. I think Colin Morgan is playing it as if Merlin is in love with Arthur, but knows he can never have him.

You're welcome! It's a very good read for me. I was doing a LJ search with keywords such as 'Merlin' and 'Arthur/Gwen' when your essays came up, so, quite incidentally. I sometimes do that when I'm desperate for metas and Tumblr doesn't provide any. As of now, I already had this journal under my RSS feeds (hope you don't mind!), since I'm not on LJ as often enough ( ... )

Nah, I don't hate Gwen, but I feel she is such a wasted character as well as being an emotional void with many of the males she's supposed to have a repertoire with- more on that in the part three. You are right; I think that Merlin and Gwen performed the same humanizing function on Arthur, even if Merlin does it better and is completely devoted to Arthur, and she didn't give a rat's ass about the guy until Merlin sauntered in and began polishing. In a way, Arthur chose what we imagine to be the socially acceptable one.I wonder if Arthur realizes in many ways he substituted her in there ( ... )

Funny that you mentioned the creators/producers' nonsense. Just now I was listening to an hour long interview with one of them; didn't exactly imbue me with confidence either. S5 sounds to me like they're trying to do too many things, and I'm kind of in doubt how well they would go about that in just 13 eps. For now there's only one thing I'm certain to be excited about, and that's BAMF Merlin, though I'm excited to see some returning characters again as well ( ... )
