I don't know the answer to your first question, but as to how to introduce a new suggie, there's a yahoo group called marsupial_mayhem that has experienced members who can help you. But I do know you should absolutely not put a new glider right in - even/especially confined like that, which could be terrifying for him. As I understand it, once you're sure the new glider's healthy, you should put him in a separate cage but put the cages near enough that they can see and smell - but not get to - each other. And at some point start switching sleeping pouches back and forth between the cages, so they get to know each other's scent. But I know there's more, and I'm not the one to help you with it, which is why I'm suggesting the yahoo group.
This is a great article on introducing gliders to each other. Also, I'd join that forum and ask any question you want! everyone on there knows what they are talking about.
out of curiosity, what type of diet were you feeding them?
Something similar happened when one of my gliders died. The other one chewed a little bit on the dead one's foot. When I picked the dead one up, the live one sort of snapped at her. I don't think it was too wake her up, as I think animals understand death. Maybe she didn't like having a dead glider in her sleeping pouch.
Mine had lived together peacefully for years, so I'm fairly certain that it was a reaction to the death and not a bullying. But I'm not sure just why the biting happens.
Thnx 4 responding, I agree....it must be the way they respond to death...as my boyz lived peacefully for 3yrs. 2gether as well....my boy wasn't in his sleeping sack, though....he was at the bottom of his cage:( Do you know what was wrong with your sugie that died?:(
