Domesticity

Jun 13, 2008 10:04

Last night I was having a gentle tidy...folding laundry, doing the washing up, sewing buttons on type of thing...looked around and the kitty had tidied herself into a drawer.  I suppoe there was residual warmth in the freshly ironed clothes...

it's from the nepenthes genus...hanging pitcher plants or 'Monkey Cups'...can you imagine coming across these in the wild!

http://www.botany.org/Carnivorous_Plants/Nepenthes.php

flies are attracted to nectar secreting glands around the rim, but the rim is waxy with backward facing hairs all of which preciptate the fly slipping into the water-filled cup to drown...as the pitcher also has digesting fluids dissolved in the water it's soon 'nom nom nom, little fly!'

...wonderful! but yes, strange and unusual...so now I have three sarecenias, a sundew and a nepenthes!

She looks so content :) Belle was sweet the other day, I couldn't find her anywhere and eventually found her wrapped up in the hem of a skirt that was on my dress form.

I love carnivourous plants! As a child I would pore over that page in my illustrated encyclopedia just because the idea of a plant eating was boggling and fascinating and just so sci-fi!

I've been considering getting a few, but worry they'll die as the only plants that I can cope with are cacti (I've had one survive for 15 years, but it died in the last house move), are they easy to care for?

Names...first to spring to mind was Marvin for some reason (probably because I started thinking about strange Sci fi a la Hitch hikers).

Hope you feel better soon.

well, I've been suprised at how well the sarecenias are doing. They like to have 'wet feet' and lots of sun. One did get scorched on a particularily hot day, but have cut of the burnt bits and he's re-growing quite happily.

I think it's a case of finding the type of plants that will thrive in a particular house...my last place was really dark and killed off the most stupendous Boston Fern, however where I am now, I seem to be able to grow African Violets which I've never managed tokeep alive before - my curent one is even re-flowering!

Wow, that puts my Flytrap to shame. Although after a tough winter, it is now utterly thriving :)

I will eventually get a flytrap, as they are such a marvellous piece of evolution! Yours is doing well...as they are such a 'novelty plant' you often get poor sad litte specimins that have been taken from the wild and not treated very well that die very easily...

I thought the same thing. What a nifty plant. So this is where Trojans really come from.

Do Magnums come from a larger plant?
