long wind-up to a fic rec

So I think it's more-or-less general knowledge that I am a bit of an insomniac. And one of the things that often works to get me to sleep is listening to very familiar books on audio. It's like a groove my brain can slip into and get carried away on. I don't know. It just works, OK ( Read more... )

I don't think I ever read a decent Discworld fic before this one. They're definitely scarce.

FAVOURITE DISCWORLD BOOK EVER (okay, favourite barring well, every other discworld favourite) but i have read and adored that fic *_* (and then attempted to write night watch fic, but apparently slash in discworld is beyond my ability -- i can't help it, i love sybil D:)

That's partly why I was so impressed by the fic--(1) it's a pairing I don't think I would ever have come up with on my own, (2) it's a discworld fic and I'm pretty sure that's a physical impossibility, and (3) it's a good discworld fic. Like...I think it may be made of magic. Or written in fairydust.

Is it just me or is Pratchett one of the least sexual authors of ever? Like, when he writes couples...they're so bland. I don't mind because I don't think the books ever need a snazzy romance plot--it's just so strikingly different from other authors. Especially other fantasy authors.

ajdljljada good discworld fic is really hard to find. i mean, writing it is hard enough, i'm not surprised there's not much around -- there's some good fic based on monstrous regiment, but alas, otherwise like a rare species of bird -- good at hiding, nearly impossible to find but kind of wonderful when discovered

and the way i feel about pratchett writing romance is similar to the way i feel about jk rowling writing it. it's nothing terribly exciting, definitely not one of their strengths, but it's passably serviceable, i guess.

on the other hand, i much prefer pratchett's go at it. there's no green monsters in bellies and he's honest about how kissing adora is like kissing an ashtray XD (and if you ever feel inclined towards trying the tv versions of these -- never ever try going postal. it's awful D:)

Unfortunately, I have already seen said adaptation of Going Postal. That was on my top fic Pratchett list too....and suuuuuch a disappointment.

At least there isn't an odious Night Watch out there. That would break my heart, no lie.
